A weekend above the Mirna.

A good weekend here needs fewer pins on a map. The useful unit is a morning in one town, a table somewhere nearby, and an afternoon that can change. This suggested two-day plan assumes a car or arranged driver; it is a rhythm for a visit, not a timed driving route.

01

Day one: give Motovun the morning

Start with the approach through Gradiziol and the gates, using the official town map. On Trg Andrea Antico, look at St Stephen’s Church and the bell tower before making the valley view your reward. If you want to walk the walls, check access and any ticket separately. Leave a generous interval before lunch: parking, the climb and an unexpected pause all take time.

02

Let lunch decide the afternoon

Choose a reserved lunch in Motovun or around Livade, then decide whether Oprtalj still feels inviting. Its loggia, old entrance and lanes make a quieter second chapter. If lunch becomes the afternoon, keep it that way. The point of this pairing is contrast within one part of Istria, not a requirement to complete both towns before a deadline.

03

Day two: follow what is open

Give Grožnjan to galleries and stone streets. Check the cultural programme first if a concert or exhibition matters to you. After the town, choose one booked countryside experience, rather than adding several tastings. Confirm the producer’s exact location: a regional address can lie well beyond the village you have just visited. Arrange a driver if wine is part of the plan.

04

Keep a version for imperfect weather

Rain changes the pleasure of a hilltop walk. Move a confirmed gallery, museum or long lunch to the centre of the day and shorten the outdoor portion. In summer, reverse the balance: walk in the cooler hours and make the middle of the day a pause. Save Buzet, Roč and Hum for another day; Gračišće belongs naturally with central Istria.
