THE OTHER SIDE OF ISTRIA

Some places ask you to slow down.

Leave the coastline behind and the landscape begins to fold. A bell tower rises above a ridge. A lane opens onto an unexpected view. In Istria’s hill towns, the best part of the day is often the part you didn’t plan.

An independent guide to the stone towns of inland Istria, across northern, central and northeastern landscapes. Choose by atmosphere, interests and the time you have.

01 / THE COLLECTION

Eleven towns. A thousand reasons to linger.

Not a checklist. An invitation to choose your own pace.

A CLOSER LOOK / MOTOVUN

Stay beyond the view.

The silhouette brings you here. The little rituals make you stay: a morning walk, a table in the shade, one more look across the valley. Give Motovun more than an afternoon.

01

A table worth taking time for

Ask for seasonal dishes, taste local olive oil and book a winery visit directly. Leave space between a tasting and the drive home; choose a designated driver.

02

The pleasure of the long way

Walking and cycling change the scale of the countryside. Choose a route suited to your ability, check current trail conditions and bring water, especially in summer.

03

A little culture, without a rush

An open studio, a stone doorway, a small museum. Check opening times, respect private homes and buy directly from local makers when something catches your eye.

Three ways to understand the landscape beyond the skyline.

04 / MAKE TIME FOR ISTRIA

A weekend, not a race.

Our suggested rhythm for a first visit. These are editorial itineraries, not timed routes; check driving conditions and reservations before setting out.

DAY ONE

Motovun → Oprtalj

Start with an unhurried walk in Motovun. Have lunch before continuing to Oprtalj for its loggia and lanes. Keep the evening free.

DAY TWO

Grožnjan → the countryside

Give the morning to galleries and village streets. Choose one pre-booked lunch or tasting in the surrounding countryside, then take your time returning.

Have another day? Pair Buzet with Hum and Roč, or explore Gračišće and central Istria. Don’t try to fit both areas into one rushed afternoon.

Find your season

Spring

Green hills & longer walks

Choose flexible plans and carry a layer for changeable weather.

Summer

Early starts & late tables

Explore in the cooler hours. Reserve meals and cultural events.

Autumn

Harvests & earthy flavours

A good season to ask about truffles, wineries and local food events.

Winter

Stone streets & quieter days

Check openings in advance and keep a weather-friendly alternative.

A few things worth knowing

Getting around

A car gives flexibility between small towns. Public transport may not suit a multi-town day; confirm each connection before relying on it.

Walking & access

Historic lanes may be steep, stepped or uneven. For reduced mobility or a pushchair, ask about the exact route and drop-off arrangements.

Time & reservations

One or two towns a day leaves room for meals and discoveries. Book tastings and special experiences directly; opening hours vary by season.

Before you go

For a first visit, choose Motovun for its skyline and valley setting, and Grožnjan for art and village streets. Add Oprtalj for a quieter stop. Buzet, Hum and Gračišće give you reasons to spend longer inland.

No sensible slow-travel plan would attempt it. Choose two towns for a comfortable day, or a small cluster when stops are brief.

Spring and autumn suit travellers who want walks and food-focused days. In summer, explore early or late. Winter can be peaceful, but confirm restaurants, galleries and attractions before you go.

There is no single pass for this collection of towns. Parking, walls, museums or individual attractions may have separate charges. Use the local tourist board links in each guide for current information.
