A place to linger
Završje, also known as Piemonte d’Istria, deserves its own stop between the better-known names. Its position above the Mirna helps explain why settlement and defence mattered here. Approach it as a place with layers of occupation, not simply as an abandoned backdrop.
The town’s history connects the Patriarchs of Aquileia, changing regional rulers and the Contarini family. Today the most satisfying visit is unhurried and respectful: public lanes, exterior architectural details and a view across the landscape, with time left for Grožnjan.
Is this your kind of town?
Choose Završje for architecture and atmosphere rather than a long list of open attractions. The public streets offer the visit; private buildings and ruins do not. Combine it with Grožnjan and make that contrast the point of the day. Bring water, respect residents and leave any unverified interior out of your schedule.
Map directions connect the named places; they are not a surveyed walking trail or an accessibility assessment. Follow local signs and public access.
A walk through the details
Suggested sequence, not a measured or waymarked route. Adapt it to access, weather and opening times.
- 01
The approach and gate
Begin where the road meets the old settlement. Leave vehicles in a permitted place and continue on foot; narrow entrances are part of the historic fabric.
- 02
The historic core
Follow public lanes towards the old church and tower. Look at the relationship between the compact centre and its defensive setting.
- 03
The outward view
Return by public streets, pausing where the valley opens. Stay outside unstable structures and private courtyards; an open doorway is not an invitation to enter.
Arrival & parking
Follow the local approach from the Grožnjan area. Use lawful parking without blocking residents or agricultural access; do not assume a formal car park at the town gate.
Walking & access
Expect irregular paving and some deteriorated buildings. Keep to public routes and avoid entering ruins, even for photographs.
Before you set out
Check services and any guided visit with the Grožnjan tourism office. Carry water and organise food in advance or in nearby Grožnjan.
