FOOD & PEOPLE / THE INTERIOR

The table begins in the valley.

From a hilltop, the Mirna country looks like a view. At the table, it becomes an ingredient and a livelihood. A food-focused day is richer when it makes that connection: meet one producer, understand what is seasonal, and leave enough time to enjoy what arrives on the plate.

01

Start with the season, not the menu photograph

The Buzet Tourist Board connects the area’s truffle culture with the Mirna landscape. White and black truffles have different seasons; availability also depends on conditions. Ask which species is being served, whether it is fresh, and whether the dish uses preserved truffle or added flavouring. A simple question gives you a clearer expectation than the word ‘truffle’ alone.

02

Karlić: a family account from Paladini

Karlić Tartufi’s own history traces its truffle-hunting activity to Ivan Rašpolić in 1966. The family’s visitor programme combines an introduction to the craft, trained dogs and tastings. Their base is Paladini 14, near Buzet. These details come from the producer’s published account; this is not a review of an attended tour. Ask which experience is running on your date and how much walking it involves.

03

Prodan: another route into the craft

Prodan Tartufi describes truffle hunting as a family tradition passed through generations, alongside its work supplying fresh truffles and making products. Its published address is Sv. Ivan, Praščari 43, Buzet. Compare the available visit with your interests: time outdoors, the dogs, a tasting, or learning how products differ. Choose one encounter that leaves time for questions, rather than turning the day into a sequence of appointments.

04

Build the day around one reservation

Before booking, confirm the meeting point, language, footwear, weather policy and what is included in the tasting or meal. Ask about dietary needs directly. Add a walk in Buzet or Motovun on either side, allowing for the countryside transfer. If you also want wine, arrange a driver. The most useful souvenir may be knowing what to ask the next time you sit down to an Istrian menu.
