An Istrian hill towns road trip

Three flexible routes, with time for the road, a long lunch and the place that makes you stop.

Use these routes as building blocks. Choose one geographical cluster for a day and reduce the stops when you book a tasting, museum or guided visit. Driving directions are linked for planning; transfer times depend on the route and conditions.

01

The Mirna valley circuit

Motovun, Oprtalj, Grožnjan and Završje form a northern collection. For one relaxed day select two, such as Motovun with Oprtalj or Grožnjan with Završje. Spread all four over two days if you want time for meals, galleries and arrival on foot.

02

The Glagolitic connection

Build another day around Buzet, Roč and Hum. Start with the old town in Buzet, then choose how deeply to explore Roč’s inscriptions and Hum’s compact centre. A booked workshop or museum visit may justify dropping one stop. Glagolitic Alley is an additional cultural route, not a town-centre shortcut.

03

The central Istrian chapter

Draguć, Gračišće and Pićan give the trip a different focus: frescoes, church architecture and hilltop civic spaces. Choose two towns if you have arranged interior visits. Treat Boljun as a separate northeastern extension and check the complete route before adding it.

04

Make the practical choices first

Collect your car before setting a tight schedule. Arrange parking and luggage with your accommodation, book one important experience per day and keep a weather alternative. A tasting requires a sober driver or organised transfer. Save the map before leaving and avoid narrow historic lanes unless access is clearly permitted.

Questions before you go

No sensible slow-travel plan would attempt it. Choose two towns for a comfortable day, or a small cluster when stops are brief.

No. These are editorial route suggestions using public map directions. Check closures, road conditions and parking locally.
