Beauty is a poor itinerary on its own. The better question is which town fits your interests and available time. This collection spans northern, central and northeastern Istria, so a good day starts by choosing one area.

01

For a first encounter

Start with Motovun if you want the defining hilltop silhouette and an expansive valley setting. Choose Grožnjan for galleries and intimate streets. Visit both with room for lunch and arrival logistics; adding every nearby town will make the day less memorable.

02

For a quieter architectural stop

Oprtalj and Završje suit travellers who enjoy reading a place through gates, loggias and the arrangement of streets. They offer a different rhythm from a day built around ticketed attractions. Respect residents and keep your visit to public areas.

03

For culture beyond the panorama

Roč and Hum form a strong cultural pairing through Glagolitic heritage. Draguć rewards preparation for frescoes, while Buzet’s historic core combines gates, squares and a museum. Confirm interiors before making them the centre of your plan.

04

For another side of inland Istria

Gračišće and Pićan belong naturally together in a central Istrian day. Boljun adds a castle and a northeastern outlook. These are reasons to return inland, rather than detours to squeeze into a Mirna-valley afternoon.

Questions before you go

Motovun and Grožnjan are a strong introduction. Choose Gračišće and Pićan instead if your interest is a focused central Istrian outing.

No. The comparison is an editorial selection by experience, not an award or a claim that one town is objectively the best.
